If you're like me, you're doing a good imitation of Bambi in the headlights- watching the train wreck in progress that is our world "financial system". And wondering where it's all going to wind up.
There's no shortage of pundits, most of them now proclaiming doom, since the bailout was rejected. No shortage of finger pointing.
yuck.
I could just really use a hug, right about now.
I bet you could too.
Hugs, guys.
Hang in there.

Hugs Back at you, Greenpa
I'm at a loss for words right now. This whole thing has gone nuts.
I wish they would think about the little people right now. The CEOs can go fly a kite for all I care.
I know some very sane and level headed people...one of whom threatened to pull their money out of the bank today.
Scary scary times.
One special super duper hug coming up.
:) viv in nz
Oh, and several more for Smidgen, Spice and the rest of you. viv
I could use a hug. I look at the rising cap on the FDIC and can't imagine why I would care. I do not know ONE SINGLE PERSON who has more than $100,000 in the bank. Heck, I'm not sure I know anybody that has more than $1,000.
I'm pretty much screwed. Sigh.
The thing about Peak Oil is that you pretty well know what's coming - it's so long from discovering to extraction to market. We've not been discovering oil so the outcome is known; is just a question of when we see the peak, in the rear view mirror.
But this - oh golly - it's full of excitement. Watch the government bend and break rules to catching the falling companies. There are comparisons to the S&L problem and how the Resolution Trust Corporation setup for it solved the problem in 4 years without costing taxpayers anything. But this time around who is expecting the housing bubble to inflate again and double prices in the next handful of years so that all of these investments magically become worth something again?
Its not much different here in Canada. A friend just adoped a pre-teen, but now is finding a screaming need for a 3rd car; and it was only a few years ago when they moved - which required 2 cars because neither is close to work or can bus to work. They are not considering moving ... and they have an upright freezer (those #@$#@$ things should be banned) that sucks as much juice as my house.
What's irksome is that there are all sorts of thefts of copper pipes from construction sites - but things are not bad yet. We've had no mass layoffs, things are still sailing along fairly well, energy prices have gone up but it's all marginal compared to what it costs one to buy a house or car or insure/maintain them.
I have family that went thru the war and things are bit different when you're country is occupied and you're stealing coal from the Russians in order to be able to cook food ... There is a long way to go down before we get near that.
right now - yes, this is scary. Big Picture - this is about the best thing that could happen. We're seeing in real time what happens when a house of cards collapses. This is a time of incredible opportunity to educate and mobilize people because it's times like these when, to use Greenpa's language, we can really move some icebergs - folks are angry, they want to understand what's going on, and in my experience when they do get a handle on what the problem is, they get furious with the greedy fools on wall street, and with our government for supporting them, and with all of us for buying it all in the first place.
I'm finding it all rather entertaining, actually, but then we are young and have neither much money nor much debt, so I am little vested in the system as it currently exists.
Besides, it's not every day that the green bloggers, who tend to have rather socialist leanings, and the libertarian bloggers, actually agree something (the bailout) is a bad idea.
So perhaps the world is coming to an end after all!
I'm kinda scared right now also. What is going to end up happening? Hugs for everyone!
Love and hugs to all from a Crunchy Libertarian lunatic in the suburbs of Pittsburgh...
LAURA
The sky isn't falling just yet ... give it a few more days.
Yup. Patience ...
Hi Greenpa, Big hugs to you from the UK. It sorta makes me more nervous that you are nervous, if you know what I mean.
We have been seeing the effects here in the UK for some months already, housing market and building market stopped to a halt and several 10's of thousands of builders and associated trades already laid off - will we ever recover? Got to keep thinking positive eh
Best wishes Babs
