It sorta makes me more nervous that you are nervous, if you know what I mean.

We have been seeing the effects here in the UK for some months already, housing market and building market stopped to a halt and several 10's of thousands of builders and associated trades already laid off - will we ever recover? Got to keep thinking positive eh
Best wishes BabsAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2703718837080088488.post-4670372593511851692008-10-03T21:56:00.000-05:002008-10-03T21:56:00.000-05:00Yup. This is a time of incredible opportunity to educate and mobilize people because it's times like these when, to use Greenpa's language, we can really move some icebergs - folks are angry, they want to understand what's going on, and in my experience when they do get a handle on what the problem is, they get furious with the greedy fools on wall street, and with our government for supporting them, and with all of us for buying it all in the first place.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2703718837080088488.post-64855969097087428362008-09-30T12:30:00.000-05:002008-09-30T12:30:00.000-05:00The thing about Peak Oil is that you pretty well k...The thing about Peak Oil is that you pretty well know what's coming - it's so long from discovering to extraction to market. We've not been discovering oil so the outcome is known; is just a question of when we see the peak, in the rear view mirror.
But this - oh golly - it's full of excitement. Watch the government bend and break rules to catching the falling companies. There are comparisons to the S&L problem and how the Resolution Trust Corporation setup for it solved the problem in 4 years without costing taxpayers anything. But this time around who is expecting the housing bubble to inflate again and double prices in the next handful of years so that all of these investments magically become worth something again?
Its not much different here in Canada. A friend just adoped a pre-teen, but now is finding a screaming need for a 3rd car; and it was only a few years ago when they moved - which required 2 cars because neither is close to work or can bus to work. They are not considering moving ... and they have an upright freezer (those #@$#@$ things should be banned) that sucks as much juice as my house.

What's irksome is that there are all sorts of thefts of copper pipes from construction sites - but things are not bad yet. We've had no mass layoffs, things are still sailing along fairly well, energy prices have gone up but it's all marginal compared to what it costs one to buy a house or car or insure/maintain them.
I have family that went thru the war and things are bit different when you're country is occupied and you're stealing coal from the Russians in order to be able to cook food ... There is a long way to go down before we get near that.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2703718837080088488.post-9785195779393836142008-09-30T12:08:00.000-05:002008-09-30T12:08:00.000-05:00I could use a hug.
